Drivers slam government road pricing proposal

16 Mar 2007

1.8 million online respondents have registered on the e-petition opposed to road pricing by the Department of Transport.

The UK government's proposal to charge motorists for every mile they travel has not been welcomed by motorists.

The proposals involve tracking motorists with satellite technology, and charging them for each mile they drive. The charges would vary according to location and time of the day.

The petition against the proposals was launched by Peter Roberts, a member of the Association of British Drivers. Mr Roberts asserted that the road pricing is just another way of taxing the British public, which is difficult and expensive to implement. Mr Roberts has instead called for improvements in the road system to ease congestion.

It will now be interesting to wait for the government's response to the petition.
